Description

The Barossa Valley is by far the most revered regional name associated with Australian shiraz – together they gift us a genuine celebration of extraordinary old-vine custodianship and a multi-generational understanding of the vital connections between ground, grape and glass. This exciting new release from the respected Vine Vale district of the Valley, and from an out-of-the-ordinary 2017 vintage, delivers a notable, contemporary wine that calls in all the deeply rich characters the regional/varietal style has become famous for. Dark, brooding plum-like fruits, a gentle side hustle of light licorice and fennel in the aromatics, and a dash of sweeter spices – a result of 18 months maturation in a mix of French and American oak barrels – all come together in a full-bodied, deeply complex matrix. Yet this is no overstatement – a luxurious softness and plush balance envelop the whole arc of the tasting experience to offer a finely designed, world-class shiraz with great capacity to age gracefully for many years.

Vintage Description 

Barossa’s 2017 vintage ended a month or more later than in recent years, with an overall yield 20-30% above a low five-year average. The 2016 growing season was one of the wettest on record. The resulting wet soils combined with a cooler than average spring and early summer meant vines grew slowly but healthily. As grapes went through veraison in January and February 2017, Barossa experienced generally average temperatures and only two short bursts of high temperatures. Two well-timed rain events in late January and early February kept vines healthy and in no rush to ripen, with the rest of February remaining dry. March saw the beginning of an Indian summer, which lasted until late April. This was perfect for consistent ripening of grapes, with good colour development and natural acidity. An excellent year for Barossa Shiraz.
